From Ball Boy to Boss
Building a Career in Sports, One Relationship at a Time
Scott Carmichael has stood beside with some of the most household names in sports and entertainment for more than fifty years.
What he has discovered on that journey is deceptively obvious: Relationships matter. Developing them. Expanding them. Honoring them. In sports or any other industry, success over time is not very often about job descriptions or CVs—it’s about people. Whether you’re collaborating with Wayne Gretzky or Jeanie Buss, John Candy or Chick Hearn or any of the committed, unknown folks who ensure events and goals are achieved day after day, nurturing those connections is vital.
It’s certainly the through line at every stage of Carmichael’s professional life, which began as a Los Angeles Lakers ball boy and eventually gave him the opportunity to found one of the sports industry’s largest search firms. Carmichael has loved working behind the scenes in professional sports, a culture fed by passion, pressure, competition, and relationships. His path has taken him from the local team to the league headquarters before he became an entrepreneur, where for almost two decades he's grown a business rooted in trust, credibility, and connection.
The sports industry is tough to get into. Not everybody likes it. It requires late hours, tough skin, persistent effort, and endless determination. But if you’re fortunate enough to enter that world, the formula for success endures: Push harder than those around you, listen more than you speak, deliver exemplary work, and always keep educating yourself. Above all, don’t quit.
But From Ball Boy to Boss is not just about life in sports—it’s about how a person creates a career path. Carmichael invites you to chase your passion. Too many capable professionals spend each day on tasks that cover the expenses but don't ignite a flame. For five decades, Carmichael has been blessed to achieve his dreams, and he's fully aware that energy to do so doesn’t just come from good fortune. It comes from choosing a direction that aligns with who you are and leaning fully into it. Nothing is more meaningful than creating a life and career you’re proud of.
