Wisdom Road
Searching America for Civility, Shared Values, and Common Ground
A 20,000-mile, seven-month road trip into the secret heart of our nation to learn what is most important to the grand mosaic of America
At a time when the United States feels hopelessly divided, educator and author Grant Lichtman set out in a tiny RV, alone, traveling back roads from Indigenous reservations and the farmlands of the Dakotas to ranchlands of the Southwest, the bayou parishes of Louisiana, border towns of the Rio Grande Valley, big-city neighborhoods, and villages across Appalachia, the East Coast, and the Northwest. He interviewed people whose voices rarely reach the national stage: veterans, farmers, social workers, refugees, ranchers, small-town politicians, fisherfolk, religious leaders, teachers, artists, business owners, and more.
Their stories, across the spectrum of location, background, politics, and beliefs, reflect a shared longing for stronger community, meaningful human connection, mutual respect, and a renewed commitment to civility.
This incredible journey is a hopeful invitation to bridge what divides us and rediscover the humanity that we all share.
Grant Lichtman
Grant Lichtman is an author, speaker, and thought leader focused on civic engagement, community building, and the future of American culture. He is the author of Wisdom Road, Thrive, Moving the Rock, #EdJourney, and The Falconer. His recent work explores the future of K–12 education and how we can dramatically transform learning for all students despite the forces of inertia that have trapped schools in the past.
For fifteen years Grant was a senior administrator at one of the largest and oldest K–12 independent schools in California with responsibilities that included business, finance, operations, technology, development, campus construction, and global studies. Before working in education, he directed business ventures in the oil and gas industry in the former Soviet Union, South America, and the US Gulf Coast. He worked close to center stage in the economic and political transformation of the USSR, the end of the Cold War, and the historic transformation of that communist-dominate economy to the outside world.
Grant graduated from Stanford University with a BS and MS in geology in 1980 and studied the deep ocean basins of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Bering Sea. He and his wife, Julie, live in Poway, California.
