Maintaining Optimism While Aging

How to Live Happily Ever After and Make Your Ever After Last Even Longer

Optimism is a choice.

As we age, doors inevitably close, health challenges arise, friends and loved ones die, and the news—from climate change to foreign wars to divisive politics—seems all bad. How can we possibly stay happy and optimistic in the face of all this?

We can. And we should! Scientists have found that a healthy lifestyle is by far the major contributor to longevity, not genetics. Combining a healthy lifestyle with an optimistic attitude—maintaining confidence and a sense of hope about the future—will positively affect lifestyle, help delay disease, and extend longevity.

This is the promise that Maintaining Optimism While Aging makes to the reader. Engage with this book, modify your attitude and lifestyle, and create your own Blue Zone where you will enjoy a longer, healthier, happier life.

“Aging is inevitable—but how we experience it is far more within our control than we once believed. John Trauth explores a powerful and often overlooked truth: Longevity is shaped not only by biology but by how we live—and how we think. Drawing from research at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, Trauth explains how, by combining a healthy lifestyle with optimism, confidence, and a sustained sense of hope about the future, individuals can create a virtuous cycle: better habits, greater resilience, delayed onset of disease, and extended years of vitality. This book offers both a scientific and deeply human perspective on aging—one that replaces fear with agency, and decline with possibility.”

Dr. Eric Verdin, president and CEO, the Buck Institute for Research on Aging
