The Legacy Balance Sheet

A Playbook for Second-Act Success in the Age of Disruption

Your First Act was about building a résumé. Your Second Act should be about building a legacy. This book will show you how.

Success in the first half of a career is often measured by titles, portfolios, and the relentless climb of the corporate ladder. But as the “First Act” concludes, many high-achieving professionals find themselves facing a daunting question: What now?

In The Legacy Balance Sheet, international business strategist and college educator Richard Hamilton Mantz (a.k.a. the Executive Professor) provides a definitive guide for professionals ready to pivot from success to significance.

Drawing on three decades of high-stakes leadership experience in international sales and strategy, Mantz bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world business execution to provide a transformative framework that goes beyond the dollars and cents of life’s traditional “P&L statement” to focus on what truly matters.

Readers will learn how to:

  • Perform a Legacy Audit of your “assets” and “liabilities”
  • Protect long-term human value from short-term pressures
  • Master the soft skills required to lead and mentor in a disrupted, modern economy
  • Translate decades of real-world results into a lasting professional and personal legacy

Whether you’re a seasoned executive contemplating reinvention, a midcareer leader seeking deeper impact, or a Gen Zer looking for a map to authentic success, this is your guide to ensuring your Second Act becomes your most meaningful yet.

“The Legacy Balance Sheet speaks to one of the great transitions of midlife: the shift from accumulating success to metabolizing wisdom. Mantz understands that a meaningful Second Act is not about stepping away from relevance but stepping more fully into purpose. This book offers a practical and humane framework for turning experience into impact, achievement into contribution, and a career into a legacy.”

—Chip Conley, founder of Modern Elder Academy and New York Times bestselling author of Learning to Love Midlife and Wisdom@Work

“I’ve spent thirty years watching executives build impressive careers and lose themselves in the process. Mantz names that problem clearly and then does something most leadership books don’t: He gives you a real framework for fixing it, built from genuine experience—not theory. The stories alone are worth the read. His case that trust is the one asset artificial intelligence can’t replicate is one I’ve come to believe myself. In an age of disruption, coherence and trust aren’t soft ideas. They are the only things that actually compound.”

—Eric Mahler, founder of Aretos Advisory, keynote speaker, and author of The Center of the Compass

Richard Hamilton Mantz

Strategic Corporate, Academic, and Career Adviser

Richard Hamilton Mantz is an accomplished global executive, an educator, and the founder and managing principal of The Executive Professor LLC, a strategic advisory firm that bridges boardroom strategy and classroom wisdom.

With over more than three decades of corporate leadership experience, including serving as vice president of international sales as well as director of global strategic accounts for multinational engineering company Danfoss, he has operated in complex global markets, led cross-cultural teams, and accumulated nearly six million air miles while driving multimillion-dollar growth.

After leaving the corporate world, he transitioned to academia and taught for more than four years as an adjunct professor at the University of the Incarnate Word’s H-E-B School of Business, where he delivered more than five hundred lectures to Gen Z students and served on the Dean’s Advisory Council. This unique journey—from C-suite to classroom—informs his distinctive “business psychologist” approach, grounded in real-world experience rather than theory alone.

As he enters his own Second Act, he channels decades of frontline wisdom into keynote speaking, executive advising, and authorship to help others navigate the complexities of “second-act” career transitions.
