The Five-Tool Creative Leader
How to Guide Artists, Thinkers, and Doers to Greatness
Being great at your craft doesn’t inherently prepare you to lead others. The skills that make you a great writer, designer, or musician don’t always translate to managing people, providing feedback, or inspiring teams under pressure.
In The Five-Tool Creative Leader, Jonathan Cude offers a sharp, witty, and unflinchingly honest look at what it takes to lead creative work and the people who produce it. Based on his three decades in the advertising world, where he has managed projects for Nike, Diet Coke, Samsung, Nationwide Insurance, and more, Cude breaks down the five critical tools every creative leader needs to develop: vision, communication, collaboration, innovation, and resilience.
Through personal anecdotes, candid insights, and interviews with leaders across industries, he details what separates the truly great from the good. He shares the difficult lessons learned from real-world successes (and a few spectacular failures) and illuminates how creative leadership is not only about having ideas but also about building an environment where the best ideas win again and again.
Whether you are leading a team for the first time or rethinking your leadership skills after years in the chair, The Five-Tool Creative Leader is a practical guide to this messy, thrilling, deeply human work. Filled with wisdom, hard-earned lessons, and a clear path for those who want to lead creative people without losing their mind, heart, or team along the way.
Jonathan Cude
Jonathan Cude is an award-winning chief creative officer and one of the industry’s most respected creative leaders. Over more than three decades, he has led work for brands including Samsung, Little Caesars, Sony, Nationwide Insurance, Sherwin-Williams, Audi, and dozens of others. As chief creative officer of TBC and former CCO of McKinney, he has helped shape campaigns recognized by Cannes Lions, The One Show, The Clios, D&AD, and The Effies.
Cude’s years at Wieden+Kennedy in Portland working on Nike and Diet Coke shaped his belief that creativity and leadership share the same DNA: curiosity, courage, and collaboration. He has spent his career proving that the best creative leaders are part coach, part teammate, and part protector of the smarts and hearts that make great work possible.
The Five-Tool Creative Leader is Cude’s first book, a reflection of the lessons learned from years on both sides of the creative table—first as the kid fetching sweet tea and chicken biscuits and later as the one helping others find their voice. He lives in North Carolina with his partner, Lea, and their children.
