Saving Social Security and America

Common Sense Solutions

The greatest threat to America’s future is not an external threat—it is our own fiscal irresponsibility; and the greatest deficit in our nation’s capital is not a budget deficit—it is a leadership deficit. The national debt continues to grow exponentially, but Congress has lacked the courage to defuse this ticking time bomb. This book is about creating a better future for Social Security and America.

The Social Security promise was made in good faith across generations. Workers and employers paid in, the system paid out, and the arrangement held for decades. Tens of millions of Americans—retirees, the disabled, surviving families—have depended on it. For many, it has been the difference between dignity and poverty, especially in the final chapters of their lives.

Saving Social Security and America is more than a book—it is a wake-up call, a call to action, and a way forward for every American who cares about our nation’s future. Drawing on the coauthors’ extensive firsthand experience, it explains in clear, understandable language why Social Security faces insolvency within just a few years and why America’s growing federal debt threatens America’s economic strength, national security, global leadership, and domestic stability.

Rather than dwelling on problems alone, this timely book delivers practical, fact-based solutions. It combines lessons from history, financial realities, and real-world experience to examine the major fiscal and political challenges confronting the United States. Most importantly, it presents illustrative reforms that have already earned broad public support and can realistically be achieved through responsible leadership.

This book empowers readers with the knowledge and confidence to become informed advocates for meaningful reform. The responsibility ultimately rests with We the People. Read this important book, share its message, and help build the public support needed to save Social Security, strengthen America’s future, and inspire leaders to act before a major crisis forces them to.

“This book is excellent—informative and bold. It centers on saving Social Security and includes other needed reforms: healthcare, defense, taxes, immigration, climate and—equally necessary—our political system. The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining, but the roof is leaking and the sun won’t be shining for long. We need action now! Here you’ll find the problems our nation faces, and practical solutions for each one. It’s a call to action. Read it and let’s act.”

—Bill Novelli, former CEO, AARP

“Our nation’s fiscal irresponsibility represents our foremost national security threat. We must restructure our nation’s finances to resolve our deficit. I note that defense cannot be exempt from the much-needed and long-overdue reforms. Absent a debt crisis, only a constitutional amendment can force the Congress to act. Dave Walker is one of the country’s great authorities on these critical subjects and I strongly recommend this book.”

—Admiral Bill Owens, former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

“Social Security’s major trust fund is set to run dry in late 2032, and the federal government has been on an unsustainable fiscal path for years. These facts present serious economic and inter-generational equity issues. This book shines the light on these challenges and shows a way forward. It is must reading.”

—Maya MacGuineas, CEO, Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget

“Fiscal responsibility is a nonpartisan national imperative. Citizen education, engagement, and activation is essential in order to achieve needed reforms. This book contains valuable information and illustrative solutions that can help to facilitate this effort and spur needed legislative action. I recommend it.”

—Dr. Carolyn Bordeaux, Executive Director, Concord Action; former member of Congress (D-GA)
