The Cost of Caring
How the Work That Heals Us Is Killing Those Who Do It
A powerful, deeply personal examination of the hidden toll of “emotional cancer” endured by those who serve as society’s safety net—and a blueprint for treating it.
Drawing on firsthand experience of more than four decades as a paramedic, law enforcement officer, emergency physician, and healthcare leader, in The Cost of Caring, Dr. Robert Frantz takes readers inside the high-stakes world of Safety Net Workers—doctors, nurses, EMTs, firefighters, police officers, and others who confront trauma and crisis every day.
Through gripping real-life stories and candid reflection, he moves beyond simplistic notions of “burnout” to reveal how repeated exposure to human suffering creates what he calls “emotional cancer”—a chronic illness that accumulates over time and can push even the most resilient caregivers to the breaking point.
But The Cost of Caring isn’t just a diagnosis. Organized around exposure, injury, and recovery, it offers practical strategies and tools for individuals, families, and decision-makers to create healthier systems of care.
Essential reading for healthcare workers, first responders, and anyone who loves them, this book is both a wake-up call and a road map—honoring those who serve while showing how they can survive and thrive in the process.
