The Battle Beyond

Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space

Fundamentally, Paul Szymanski and Jerry Drew remind us that—more than just simply a clash of weapons—all warfare manifests as a competition between human minds. The same holds true in the battle beyond in outer space. The contests of space warfare will test the knowledge, experience, fears, beliefs, stamina, and will of the people, their military commanders, and their political leadership like never before. It is thus essential to prepare for the military implications of wars that extend into space, to root space warfare in the military thought of the past, to adapt it to the needs of the future, and to complete its integration as an essential part of the Western way of war. Beginning with the word “war” itself, Szymanski and Drew guide the reader through a comprehensive consideration of the levels of warfare as viewed through the eyes of experienced space warfare practitioners. They make relevant centuries-old terms of art, linking the Napoleonic thought of the past to the network-dependent wars of the future and explaining esoteric disciplines like orbital warfare and electromagnetic operations in a way that will appeal to both novices and veterans of the discipline. In so doing, they expand upon the existing lexicon of war, instructing the reader on how to fight and win the coming war in space. Rich in symbology, illustrations, and historical examples, this book could not come at a more critical time for the security of the United States and its Allies.

The Battle Beyond: Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space, provides a superb foundation for the theory, doctrine, strategies, and tactics needed to deter—and, if necessary, to fight and win space wars. Starting with the timeless observations of Sun Tzu, and building on US current military doctrine, this book provides powerful ‘big ideas’ for operations in space. It includes thoughtful discussions on space principles of war, orbital choke points, linkages between the terrestrial and space conflict escalation ladder, space command and control, and strategic considerations for potential space warfare. Surprisingly, The Battle Beyond is also a great read that will be very valuable for both casual observers and professional space warfighters alike.”—General David Petraeus, US Army (Ret.), Former: Commander of the Surge in Iraq, US Central Command, and NATO and US Forces in Afghanistan, and former Director of the CIA

The Battle Beyond: Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space by Paul Szymanski and Jerry Drew provides novel insight into the unique complexities of the space domain and space warfare concepts. It illustrates the inherent complexity of the space domain and supports the need for deliberate resource allocation, training, and operational concepts to ensure our future joint and combined arms operations are supported with robust space capability. Provides good perspective on the importance of preparing for war in space.”—Timothy J. Harp, Former: Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for C4ISR, IT, Intelligence and Space; US Mission to NATO Director, Brussels, Belgium; and Board member on five major NATO standing boards and committees

The Battle Beyond is an impressive work that can inform our space warfighters, strategists, and planners at a very critical time in our participation in on-going complex, multi-domain operations in multiple theaters. The evolving great power struggles we see today demand thoughtful approaches to our National Defense and Security Strategies...Paul and Jerry provide that.”—Gene Renuart, General, United States Air Force, (ret.), Former: Commander of NORAD–NORTHCOM; Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense; Director of Strategic Plans and Policy, The Joint Staff; Vice Commander of Pacific Air Forces

“A terrific and necessary read for understanding all elements of deterring, fighting and winning in the Space Domain. Professional war fighters, put this on your shelf of must-reads. Highly recommended!”—Admiral Bill Gortney, United States Navy, (ret.), Former: Commander of NORAD – NORTHCOM; Commander of US Fleet Forces Command; Director of The Joint Chiefs of Staff; Commander of US Fifth Fleet; and Commander of Carrier Strike Group Ten, Harry S. Truman Strike Group

“Our warfighter needs every advantage in future wars when engaging our enemy and the US needs every tool available to be win. The Battle Beyond: Fighting and Winning the Coming War in Space provides a perspective of war fighting in the outer space domain. It should be required reading by anyone interested into future conflicts and military strategy to secure an advantage over the enemy.”—Rear Admiral Gregory J. Slavonic (ret.), Former: Acting Under Secretary of the Navy; 18th Assistant Secretary of the Navy; Chief of Staff of US Senator James Lankford and US Congressman James Lankford; and, Director of Public Affairs, Multi-National Force - Iraq (MNF-I)
